“I ______ You”

If I were to ask you what the three most powerful words in this universe are, you will probably answer “I Love You.”

And I would disagree.

I Love You – They make any relationship special. They make any moment so important. They make you feel on top of the world.

I Love You – What if I told you there’s something better? That there’s something more important?

I recently stumbled upon the wedding video of Colleen and Joshua. For a very long time, I thought I was the only person who believed in those words. Who knew how they made every other sentence in this entire galaxy seem so irrelevant. And then I heard Joshua’s wedding vows.

Love. He can love you and still not be with you.

Love. She will love you and still marry him.

Love. They love you but still won’t want you.

Love. It’s not the most powerful word.

Love. It’s not enough.

They still have to Choose you.

On your worst day, when you’re stuck with the flu and your loved one has to be elsewhere, it is not love that keeps them by your side. It is the choice that you are more important than anyone else. Because there isn’t a sentence in this world that will matter as much as – I Choose You.

I Choose You. In sickness and in health.

I Choose You. For better or for worse.

I Choose You. Since the day you were born until forever.

I Choose You. Despite your flaws and your shortcomings.

I Choose You. You’re not my best friend, you’re my sister.

I Choose You. You were a parent when we had none.

I Choose You. No matter what the world comes up with.

I Choose You. Despite the rest of the human population.

I Choose You. Even if she’s better.

I Choose You. Today. Tomorrow.

For the rest of my life,

I will always choose you.

It’s everything.

That was amazing. In the beginning, when you said that you disagreed with the popular opinion, I was wondering where you’d go with this. And after reading the rest, a lot of perspectives of mine changed. Thank you for that.

I couldn’t wait to find out, your entire argument for I love you not being the most important words..
    Now I am sold..
So much I will write a sequel to this epic teachable moment of a post.
I choose you to have made my Sunday morning 😊
    Thank you for sharing

Its amazing and seriously most important thing in life “choice”.. people may love u d most on earth but everything depends on the choice they finally make..👌

Choice can really make a big difference and merely love is not enough. You need the perseverance to keep learning about your partner. Once you choose to stop learning, love doesn’t mean a thing. Love this piece! xx

This is an excellent reminder as to how commitment to any relationship is a CHOICE. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the idea of love that we forget just how important it is that the two people engaged in any couple are on the same page. This post was a great reminder of that.

This was just wonderful! Simple yet so true! I was never able to pinpoint what was truly wrong or naive about the words “I love you” leading to a happy ending. This definitely has helped make my thoughts less confused. ❤

This was so beautiful. Being chosen or choosing to be with someone is such a powerful feeling. It’s so much less passive than being “in love.” Great post!

Love the title, it engages the reader.
My only piece of advice would be to suggest not to frame the reader as someone who holds the belief that “I love you” is the most powerful three worded phrase, because if they don’t hold this belief, it might alienate them just a smidge.
However I love the message of this post, the way part of it is formatted as a list, and your writing style. I fully enjoyed reading it!
I’d love for you to check out my post titled “Nighttime Transient”, and if you enjoy it enough, perhaps you’ll consider following my blog. (:

Shoot…I mean like do you ever run across something that makes you think I want to write but there’s no way I will ever write half as well as this person? I absolutely loved this post “I choose you.” Dang you really made me think. Love this blog and please keep writing.

I really enjoyed this post – reminded me of one of my favourite quotes.

    “I do not believe in a fate that falls on men however they act;
but I do believe in a fate that falls on them unless they act.” – Buddha

That is a very good point! Found you swimming in the Community Pool. Your writing is beautiful. And this post is very much down my line. When you said that “I love you” is not the strongest thing to say, I immediately thought you would then say “I hate you” is. But you didn’t. You wrote a very beautiful post about something truly important and in a way it was eye opening. I’m glad my husband chose me and I’m glad I chose him 😉

This post really did change the way I look at love and relationships now. The words I choose you, they seem so powerful. I do remember when I watched their vows, it stood out, but I didn’t really take it in. However now I see. Thank you for this amazing post!
